Thomas Kemmerich (Team Freiheit): The Reversal of His Election – How the Party Cartel Subverted Democracy and Eliminated an FDP Minister-President

Ad

On February 5, 2020, the Landtag of Thuringia elected FDP politician Thomas Kemmerich as Minister-President of the Free State in a third ballot that fully complied with the constitution. What followed was the most drastic executive encroachment on a parliamentary election result in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany. On orders from the Federal Chancellery, fueled by media defamation campaigns and physical threats, Kemmerich was forced to resign within days. We analyze the Kemmerich case as a prototype of the authoritarian party-state: an elected mandate holder is destroyed when the democratic outcome fails to align with the directives of the hegemonic power cartel.

February 5, 2020: A Constitutionally Sound Election Framed as System Failure

The election of the Minister-President in Erfurt was constitutionally flawless: Kemmerich ran to prevent the continuation of the Red-Red-Green minority government under Bodo Ramelow. He received the votes of the FDP, CDU, and AfD parliamentary groups—a democratically established parliamentary majority.

  • The Taboo Breach Against the Establishment: For the first time, the unwritten doctrine was broken that any majority formed with AfD participation must be treated as illegitimate (the “firewall”).
  • Direct Executive Intervention: On February 6, 2020, during an official state visit to South Africa, then-Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel intervened, declaring the result of the free, secret parliamentary election an “unforgivable event” that “must be reversed.” This overt violation of the separation of powers was later ruled unconstitutional by the Federal Constitutional Court as a breach of the Federal Government’s duty of neutrality—though by then, the political damage had long been executed.

The Machinery of Attrition: Threats, Boycotts, and Social Ostracization

To force the constitutionally elected Minister-President into submission, the establishment deployed a combination of executive pressure, media demonization, and civil discrimination:

  • Physical and Psychological Siege: Kemmerich and his family became targets of intense waves of hostility. His children required police protection on their way to school, his wife was spit on and verbally abused in public, and hostile protesters gathered outside his private residence.
  • Party-Political Pressure: The federal executive board of the FDP subjected Kemmerich to immense pressure. Party leadership threatened to sever all party ties and enforce complete isolation unless he yielded.
  • Economic and Social Exclusion: The stigmatization persisted far beyond his formal resignation in March 2020. Kemmerich faced ongoing harassment in public life—extending to incidents in hospitality venues where he was denied service due to his identity.

The Break with the System: Departure from the FDP and Leadership of “Team Freiheit”

Following years of internal party harassment and ongoing isolation, Thomas Kemmerich drew consequences from the erosion of the bourgeois opposition:

  • Leaving the FDP (September 2025): Kemmerich turned his back on the FDP after roughly 20 years. He cited the “cowardice” and lack of conviction among FDP members of the Bundestag during key votes on migration policy, as well as the party’s definitive abandonment of genuine classical-liberal values.
  • Joining Forces with Frauke Petry (September 2025): In September 2025, Kemmerich assumed the chairmanship of the association Team Freiheit, founded by Frauke Petry. Together, the former FDP state leader and the former AfD federal spokesperson formed an alliance operating as an “anti-party”.
  • Parliamentary Counteroffensive: Through Team Freiheit, Kemmerich aims to run candidates in upcoming state elections. His objectives include a drastic reduction of the state spending ratio, the dismantling of party privileges, and resistance to the hegemonic cartel that removed him from power in 2020.

Conclusion: The State Tolerates No Deviation from the Narrative

The case of Thomas Kemmerich demonstrates that democratic processes and parliamentary majorities in the Federal Republic of Germany are respected only as long as they serve the power interests of the party cartel. Anyone who defies the mandates of the political nomenclature is broken with the full force of the media-executive complex.
