Movie Review: „Bonhoeffer“ (Original Title: „Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin“)

    Ad

This is a review of the 2024 film “Bonhoeffer.” The movie narrates the biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, from his childhood and theological studies in New York (including his encounters with racism and African-American faith life) to his resistance against National Socialism and ultimately his execution in April 1945.

While the international version places heavy dramaturgical focus on suspense and action, the German version attempts to prioritize historical accuracy—for example, by omitting the iconic “gun poster” advertisement used in the US.

    Positives of the Film

    • Strong Acting Performances: German leads such as Jonas Dassler, August Diehl, and Moritz Bleibtreu are visually and emotionally convincing.
    • Timeless Relevance: Both the director and critics emphasize that the film raises vital questions about resistance, anti-fascism, and civil responsibility—topics that remain highly relevant today.
    • Moving Imagery: Specific scenes, such as the Last Supper in prison, deeply touch many viewers.

    Critique and Points of Contention

    • Historical Inaccuracies & Over-Dramatization:The film takes significant creative liberties, such as fictional jazz performances in Harlem or questionable attacks in US hotels. Scenes like the stylized prison execution evoke a sense of kitsch, sometimes reminiscent of traditional crucifixion depictions. The chronology of events is altered for dramatic effect.
    • Simplification of Theological Depth:Bonhoeffer is often portrayed as a heroic savior, while his profound inner conflicts regarding violence and morality remain somewhat superficial. The complex theological discourse on “cheap grace” and the “jeopardy of justice” is barely represented.
    • Politicization & Instrumentalization:Especially in the USA, the film’s marketing (the “assassin” plot and gun imagery) led to its adoption by certain evangelical groups. This sparked sharp criticism from scholars and Bonhoeffer’s descendants. While German church representatives (EKD) and historians warn against distortion, they find the European version to be more nuanced.

    Rating & Recommendation

    AspectRating
Acting⭐⭐⭐⭐ – Strong, dedicated actors; believable characters.
    Directing⭐⭐ – Solid, but partly over-sentimental and old-fashioned.
Historical Accuracy⭐ – Many liberties taken with facts; irritating for experts.
Lasting Impression⭐⭐⭐ – Encourages discussion if viewed in a conscious context.

    Conclusion: Lacking in Depth

“Bonhoeffer” offers a visually impressive and emotional gateway to Bonhoeffer’s life but falls short in historical and theological depth. Those prepared to reflect on the artistic and political-instrumental background will find it a moving film with a critical function. However, those looking for an accurate biography will be disappointed. (Personal note: We found the title song by Lauren Daigle to be the best part of the movie.)
