A vehicle belonging to German MP Bernd Baumann (Alternative for Germany – AfD) was set on fire early Monday morning in the Hamburg district of Othmarschen. Authorities are investigating the case as a politically motivated crime.
The Incident
At around 3:20 a.m., Baumann’s car, parked outside his private residence, went up in flames. The fire rapidly spread to three other nearby vehicles before firefighters were able to extinguish it. Police believe the fire was intentionally set.
The Hamburg State Security Division has taken over the investigation, citing suspected political motivation behind the attack.
Claim of Responsibility
Shortly after the incident, a post appeared on the far-left platform Indymedia, in which an Antifa-affiliated group claimed responsibility. The text praised the burning of the vehicle and included threats toward supporters of conservative and right-wing politics.
Police are treating the posting as likely authentic, pending forensic and digital analysis.
Political Reactions
Bundestag President Julia Klöckner condemned the attack in parliament, stating:
“There is no such thing as ‘good’ or ‘justified’ violence in a democracy. Political differences do not legitimize attacks on elected officials.”
Her remarks received cross-party applause.
Baumann criticized what he called “a lack of serious prosecution pressure” against far-left extremists and accused other parties of selective outrage when violence targets AfD members.
Broader Context: Increasing Attacks on Politicians in Germany
- 2024 saw a significant rise in attacks on political office-holders and candidates, including physical assaults, arson, threats, and vandalism.
- The AfD has been disproportionately affected by violent attacks, while members of other parties (especially the Greens and SPD) are more frequently targeted by harassment, insults, and online abuse.
- German security services warn that escalating violence threatens to intimidate democratic participation, particularly at the local government level, where many politicians serve in unpaid or part-time roles.
Key Questions Moving Forward
- Will investigators be able to identify the perpetrators?
- How will law enforcement respond to the surge of far-left and far-right politically motivated crimes?
- What protective measures will be taken for elected officials at the local and federal levels?
